Daniel M. Peterson
EXPERIENCE SUMMARY
I founded one of the first computer stores in the world, Digital Design, in 1976. This was before PC's and before the Apple II computer. I successfully marketed small computer systems used in the home and in industry. I manufactured and sold small peripherals to the public and to computer manufactures.
I have been involved in retail and wholesale since I was a child working in my family's importing business. In that business, Scandinavian Art Handicraft, I was engaged in activities such as purchasing, merchandising, advertising design and placement, product design, and store display. I was solely responsible for the family's silk importing business and built up the distribution channels as well as developing the largest importing and wholesale business of silk thread in the United States. Among the products which I developed were a line of macramé' supplies, needlepoint kits, and rya rug kits. At the height of the early to mid 1970's I was a well respected person in the textile crafts business.
I am educated in physics, nuclear engineering, film, theatre, photography, textile design and computing. I studied under Frederick Werner at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio in the 1970's. Dr. Werner was heavily involved with the people at Dartmouth who developed BASIC and the Dartmouth Timesharing Service. As a freshman, I was the only undergraduate at the University of Cincinnati to have a fellowship in physics. I was responsible for research into phosphorescent phenomena under the late Issay Balinkin, the foremost authority on color and light in the world at the time. I developed a process to "freeze" images, on phosphorescent materials, for long periods of time and then retrieve them. I built the laboratory equipment used in the research.
I was the editor of the 1982 Cincinnati Companion, a resource book of the Cincinnati, Ohio area. This publication was used by many companies, including Proctor and Gamble, for recruiting and was a best seller on Cincinnati in the bookstores.
I have for many years worked in the Information Technology field. One of my great creations is a communications center which takes orders for Italian food for delivery or take away. This site serves about fifty restaurants in the Cincinnati, Ohio area and has over 500,000 active accounts. The center communicates in real time with all of the stores and when a customer calls back for an order status, information on the order is available.
I recently worked on the conception of an Internet commerce site for a large maker of consumer electronics. There, I also created reports for data warehousing, SAP and manufacturing. I also created many white papers on issues around the company's intranet.
I currently am a consultant and Director of Technology and Electronic Commerce for Exinom Technologies, Iselin, NJ.
I have working knowledge of UNIX, including administration, Cognos PowerPlay and Impromptu OLAP and reporting tools, restaurant POS systems, NeXTStep, various spread sheet and word processing products, various graphic products (on NeXTStep), and various other software products.
My less recent knowledge includes PRIMOS, CBASIC, CP/M, DEC RST11, Dartmouth Time Sharing System, Intel 8080 machine language, and various versions of BASIC.
